10 Online Business Ideas for Uganda

Today, I have shortlisted 10 online business ideas for Uganda. Look at this list and choose any business idea that you feel will make a difference for the people you intend to serve.

After getting a business idea, don’t wait for things to align in order to start, start with the little you have and let the many other things come later. Now let’s dive in.

1) Blogging

Number one on the list of 10 Online business ideas for Uganda 2022 is blogging. Blogging is when one starts a website(blog) and posts articles on it regularly.

In blogging, you make money from advertisements (ads), affiliate marketing, and sponsored posts. You can also use your blog to sell your own products like books and courses.

2) Sell Online

There are many platforms here in Uganda that allow you to sell your products on them.

These platforms are in form of websites and applications. Examples include JijiJumiaTunda and many more.

If you have stuff at home that you don’t need, you can cash in on them. Most products sold online are; gadgets(TVs, Phones, Fridges), clothes, books and lands and many more.

3) Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is the act of earning a commission on every product you promote. As an affiliate, you register with a company/website and you start promoting their products to your people.

If people like what you are promoting and they click on the link you have provided and make a purchase, you automatically earn a percentage off that sale.

All you need to start this business is to register yourself to become an affiliate for some companies especially Amazon, Jumia and Walmart.

After that, you will access a product catalogue where you can choose any product you want to promote.

They will give you a link for every product you want to promote that you will paste on the website or social media platform you want to promote.

When someone sees it and clicks on it and makes a purchase, you make money automatically.

4) Website Designing

As I had already said, many people are now starting their own personal websites while others want websites for their businesses, so the demand for website designs(themes) is so high.

If you are skilled in website designing, you should use this opportunity to start designing themes.

Start your own website and display your digital products for your potential clients to see and also make a purchase if interested.

You need to be a good website designer if you are to fully succeed in this sector, but you can learn.

Use an established online store that specialises in selling website designs(themes). The most known and recommended store is Themeforest.

5) Online Shop/Store

Many businesses here in Uganda have opened online stores. An online store is a store/shop that displays products you are selling with their price tags.

Online shops are easy to start and they are not taxed.

They are borderless. (You can sell your products to Somalia yet you are in Uganda.).An online store is like any other website, just that it is designed to show products and their prices.

If you want a live example of an online shop in Uganda, we have Jumia and Simba Telecom.

6) Freelancer

A freelancer is an expert who is ready for hire. A freelancer makes money by being hired by people in need of his services.

For example, there are website design freelancers. These types of freelancers are hired to design a website for clients who don’t want to design their websites themselves.

Freelancing is not only limited to websites, you can be a freelance teacher, writer, counsellor, advisor, manager and much more.

All you have to do is either set up your own website and let people approach you on your website or join a well-established website full of other freelancers and let people who need your services find you there.

I recommend the latter if you are only starting out. The best website to start with is Fiverr.

7) Dropshipping

Do you want to start an online store but you are limited by stock and you now want to quit? think again. With drop shipping, you don’t need to have physical products.

All you have to do is set up a website and link with the product manufacturers.

When a client makes an order via your website, you send the order to the company you are in coordination with and they do the delivery of products for you.

So in brief, Dropshipping is like Affiliate marketing.

The major difference between the two is that in drop shipping, customers make the order directly on your website whereas, in affiliate marketing, you refer a client to the store/website selling that product and they do purchase from that website as well.

But in both two online business ideas, you don’t need to have a physical product in order to start or operate. All you need is a website to do these two businesses.

8) Publish Your Own Book

This is for all the writers in the building. If you have a knack for writing and you are not easily bored sitting in a front of a computer for a long time, you can publish your own books and sell them online.

Still, there are two ways how you can do this. One is starting your own website and publishing your books on it for your customers to see.

This method however may take you a long before your first cheque comes in.

The second option is using the already established platforms to publish your books. The most popular platform that sells books online is Amazon.

By opening a publisher account with Amazon, you can readily start adding your own books to the biggest online store in the world.

9) Become an influencer

This is for all social media fans. You can make money off your social media page or group, but there is a catch.

Becoming an influencer is not a one-night thing though to some it takes them days to become social media influencers, it may take you months if not years unless you are related to a celebrity or you will become one soon.

But if you give it your heart, love and determination, you can make it. A good example I can give you of a social media influencer in Uganda is NTV Presenter Faridah Nakazibwe. She has built her influence slowly but surely.

You too can do that. Now if you are asking how you make money as an influencer, well, influencers make money off advertisements. Companies pay influencers to promote their products to their followers.

The biggest platforms to become an influencer are Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok.

10) Build Apps

Last but not least, is building apps. If you are tech-savvy and you have coding skills, why not build apps? There is a high demand for mobile apps.

You can create digital products for purchase or as a service provider.

For example, you can create an app or service and sell it or give it out for free and earn from adverts. Either way, you will be making money off your products.
