A blog is a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group written in an informal or conversational style.

A man on his blog

Blogs were rarely used in the past 5 to 10 years but now there are 20 blogs created every minute.

Today we want to look at a step-by-step guide on how to start a blog in Uganda (And actually make money for beginners), but before we go there, I talked about making money in the title.

Yes, it is true. People make real money on their blogs and we too here at Infant Entrepreneur make money here on our blog.

I will show you too how you can make money off your blog as we continue but one thing I want to tell you is I started this blog after closing down 2 blogs.

I had started the previous 2 blogs as an amateur and I messed up a lot.

I ran my previous blogs for over a year without making a single coin off my blog and with no one interested in reading what I wrote.

I later met someone before starting Infant Entrepreneur. Someone who would become my mentor in this world of blogging.

His name is Jake Falkinder. Jake taught me all that I know currently about blogging and I really recommend his work if you are a total beginner in blogging.

NOTICE:
Jake has a book where he talks all about starting a blog and making your first money on your blog.

His book "It pays to Blog" is available for only $9.95 and I want to tell you from experience, it is a lot cheaper compared to the value you gain from it.

It took us 7 months and 1 week to get our first paycheck off our blog. It doesn’t mean it will take you this long or it will be fewer than these.

What it means is it is not a single-night event to make money from blogging.

There are currently many bloggers in Uganda making some good money off their online-based business and some have even stopped doing other businesses and settled on blogging as a full-time business.

Well surely, I have not yet reached that level but we are striving for that as well. So enough of the introduction, let us get to the party now! But before I go;

I want to you know that I started this blog with no prior knowledge of blogging and I was able to make it.

You too can. (If you want to jumpstart your blogging journey and jump most of the pitfalls most beginners in Blogging make, get yourself a book from my mentor Jake ⇥here⇤)

So How Does One Start A Blog

There are two types of blogs. One is the free blog and the paid blog.

The free blog is truly free like its name but with many limitations. On the paid version, you have all the tools in your hands to create a superior blog.

Companies like WordPress and Blogger saw it fit to allow everyone to start a blog. That is why they decided to offer free blog services on WordPress and Blogger respectively.

I have no problem with these two companies and the free blog versions they offer if you are just making yourself familiar with what a blog is and how to write blog articles, but if you are serious about blogging and making money on your blog, a FREE blog platform won’t be of any help.

The next challenge with free blog platforms is the mid-name they add to your domain.

By mid-name, I mean the free blogging platforms don’t allow you to personalize your domain. For example, our domain is infantentrepreneur.com.

If we were using a free blog platform, our domain would be infantentrepreneur.wordpress.com or infantentrepreneur.blogger.com.

Though free and though anyone can remember your address, it does not look professional at all.

That is why I encourage you to go for

When you host your site on Bluehost, Bluehost pays for you the domain, so you don’t have to pay a single coin for it.

The next thing is with a free version of hosting you are limited to how much content you can upload on your site and download.

Now! What does it take to start a website/Blog in Uganda

You need the following;

  • Topic
  • A Domain
  • A Web Host
  • A Theme

Step 1: Getting a Topic

Your website needs a basis (topic) on which to base on. By topic, I mean a niche (what your blog will be about)

For Example, here at Infant Entrepreneur, our niche is personal finance.

We focus on improving people’s financial state through articles about making money, saving money and investing money.

There are many niches you can choose from, but before we go there, you need to choose a niche that you are well conversant with.

It is not good to get a niche only to write an article and lack what to write there next.

You need a niche that can be monetized.

Now let us get this straight, not all blogs are started with the main purpose of making money and I encourage you too not to start your blog with the main purpose of making money.

NB: Start a blog with the purpose of serving people and then you can later monetize it and start getting money off your hard work.

The third thing to consider when choosing a niche is the ability to expand.

Don’t choose a niche that is too narrow that you will exhaust with one topic.

Choose a niche that is quite broad that will allow you to expand if you need to.

Also, don’t choose a broad topic. Choose a topic that is at least related to one item or two items not everything because if you want to attract everyone, you may end up attracting no one.

Let us look at the niches now;

  • Entertainment News
  • Travel
  • Personal Finance
  • Sports
  • Food Recipe
  • Fitness
  • Health
  • Dating and Relationships
  • Self-improvement
  • Make money on the internet

These are some of the niches on which you can base your blog. It is good to have a niche that is in line with your passion because starting a blog and making it successful can be boring at first.

You won’t have anyone to cheer you up, so you need your passion to be your cheerleader in these tender times.

Are you worried you don’t know what to write as you start a blog in Uganda (And actually make money for beginners)? Don’t worry.

You don’t have to know everything about your given niche in order for you to start. Start with the little you currently know and learn more about your niche as you grow with your blog.

Step 2: Get a Domain

A domain is your address on planet internet. With a domain name, you can easily be seen by whoever wants to approach your website on the internet.

As I have already said, there are two types of domains, paid and free. I encourage and recommend the latter.

You need to have your own paid domain in order to really benefit from your blog.

Step 3: Get A Web Host.

A web host is a supercomputer that stores all your website files on its servers so it can be accessed by everyone in the world by just typing in your domain in the web browsers.

SPECIAL NOTICE EXCLUSIVE TO INFANT ENTREPRENEUR USERS ONLY

BlueHost has accepted our request to allow Infant Entrepreneur users to host any website on their servers at a cheap price of $2.75/month.

I don't know how long this offer will stand but I encourage you to take use of it now before it expires. Host your website today on BlueHost for as low as $2.75/month

NB: Don't forget to send me a Thank You after using our link.

There are many web hosts on the internet but I recommend Bluehost. I host all of my websites on Bluehost and I love many things about this host but some of the things I find on Bluehost and not any other web host is;

Free Domain Name (If you decide to host your website on Bluehost, it pays for your domain name. You don’t have to incur double the costs of registering a domain name and also paying a WebHost to host your website)

Host your Blog/website

The blog needs to be hosted by a server that will keep it online. There are millions of hosts on the internet and we too here in Uganda have hosts that can host your blog and keep it online.

But today I want to recommend the host I have used for years and it is still reliable. This host is Bluehost. Bluehost is the best host that you need as a beginner.

They offer services just like many other hosts but they have some services that you can’t find anywhere else.

The best services offered by Bluehost include;

  • Customer care services: Bluehost has the best customer care you will get from WebHost. They are always online 24/7 and any time you need them, you can get in touch with them.
  • Cheap Price: At just $2.95/month you can have your blog running in no time. That is the power of Bluehost.
  • Free Domain: With Bluehost, you don’t have to pay for domain name registration. You get a free domain name with Bluehost.

The host needs to have the following for it to qualify to be a good host.

Customer care services: No man is perfect. We all need help somewhere and this is where customer care comes in.

With Bluehost, their customer care crew is always there for any inquiries. If you feel you are stuck, you can contact them at any time.

Speed: When it comes to online business, you need a website that is lightning fast because each time your blog takes longer to load, a user may easily leave it and go for another website that loads faster.

BlueHost knows this and it set up its supercomputer to offer your website as fast as it can so you don’t need to worry about your website speed.

Step 4: Get a theme

After getting a host and installing WordPress on your website, the next step on how to start a blog in Uganda (And actually make money for beginners) is getting a theme to build on your website.

Bluehost, they do the website installation for you. All you have to do is select the platform you want, but here we are going for WordPress and it will install the website for you.

A theme is just like a cloth, it gives your website a shape and appearance. There are two types of themes on WordPress.

  • Free Themes
  • Premium Themes

Free themes are given for free and you don’t need to pay any coin for them. For the premium theme, you need to pay money to get it.

Basically, as a beginner, you need a free WordPress theme and as you grow and want more customization, you can purchase a premium theme.

Premium themes are good if you want to customize your website and make it what you want it to be.

Free themes don’t come with this allowance, so if you need to customize your theme, you need a premium theme.

There are plenty of premium themes on the market that you can buy according to your website type.

For example, if you are going to start a news-type of website, you need a Newspaper theme or Soledad theme.

If you want a blog like ours here, you need Generatepress (GP) theme. It is good and customisable. GeneratePress has both the free version and the Premium Version. You can choose any you want.

Step 5: Monetize your Blog

Last but not least is making money off your blog.

Not all blogs are started with the sole purpose of making money but most of the blogs are started with the purpose of making money and if you too want to make money here are the steps.

You can make money from your blog by using;

Ads: There are many companies that supply ads on the internet but the most common companies are Google AdsensemgidTaboola and many more.

Ads pay according to your traffic (the number of people visiting your website). The more people, the more they earn.

Affiliate Marketing: Affiliates refer other people to products and services. As an affiliate, you don’t need to have a product of your own to make money online.

You just need to refer other people’s products on your website and you get money for every purchase by a person referred by your link.

You need to first register with the company or website that you want to promote and then every time you refer someone and they make a purchase, you get a commission off the money paid by the client you have referred.

Online store: Some people make money off their blogs by selling their own products directly on their websites.

This is what we call an online store business. You put your business online and you sell to your customers and anyone that comes to your website.

You can make plenty of money using this method because no one deducts the money you make. All the money you make is yours to keep.

Those are the ways how you can make money on your blog. But one thing to remember, making money online is not a single-day event. It takes time, patience and a lot of practice.

But please don’t give up if you don’t make money off your blog at first. It took us months to get our first paycheck off this website, but we are still adjusting in order to make more money.

Your Turn…

NOTEIf you make any purchase via the links we have provided, we will get a small commission but this won’t have any effect on the price of the item you purchase. If you appreciate our work, please support us by making purchases via our links. Thanks

Here we come to the end of how to start a blog in Uganda (And actually make money for beginners).
